Work Trial on Wild Boar in Single: The 1st Derby for Dogs to Follow on wild boar was a success.
The 2010 Derby for dogs followed by wild boar took place in the dog training area of Cerrosughero in Canino (Vt) during the last weekend of May and the first of June. The test, in its first edition, an absolute novelty in the national hound scene, was organized by the provincial section of the National Union of Wild Boar Hunters and Federcaccia di Viterbo and by the municipal section Federcaccia di Oriolo Romano with the recognition and hospitality of the 20th Game Fair Italy that has included it in the scheduled events.
The race was reserved for dogs born after 1 January 2010 and the response of the enthusiasts was not long in coming with a number of entries that put a strain on the program limited to four rounds of loose for this first edition. Sorry for all those who were unable to participate for this very reason but the judging group, composed of the highly competent federal judges Ivo Angeli, Marco Di Ventura and Arcangelo Graziani, set limits precisely to avoid, in a situation of summer heat, consequences for the dogs competing in the last rounds.
Furthermore, the climatic difference between morning and afternoon would certainly have penalized the participants drawn last, making it difficult to make a uniform judgment. The choice in this sense turned out to be correct because all four days of competition took place with a summer climate that put dogs and handlers to the test. Furthermore, the dog training area of Cerrosughero, an enclosure of about 75 hectares, proved to be very selective, making the race even more exciting but putting many participants in the position of not encountering the wild despite the 40 minutes of time available.
Another note of merit should be acknowledged to the participants from Lazio, Umbria, Tuscany and Abruzzo who asked to anticipate the start of the races precisely to avoid the sultry heat in spite of the long transfers they had to face before dawn. Although the race was open to all hounds, in the end only Maremma hounds fought each other testifying to the success of this breed among enthusiasts but above all, as Ivo Angeli pointed out, a sign of an Italian typicality in the Maremma land that hosted the Derby.
The winner with merit was Scugnizzo owned by Mario Galletti, a young breeder from Monteromano (Vt) who highlighted the typical qualities of the breed with a convincing test session. The owner thus won the double win offered by the Fidc Lazio ahead of Battaglia (score 161 owner Tognaccini Francesco) and Mascherina (score 156 owner Fineschi Ivano) both from Gaiole in Chianti. The award ceremony took place within the Game Fair in the presence of the national president of Federcaccia Dall'Olio.
Given the success of the event, the organizers are already looking forward to next year's edition which will be organized again by the tireless Fidc sections of Viterbo and Oriolo Romano. Fans can already start preparing!
