The 24th Campolese Truffle Festival starts, From past to present, the truffle protagonist of Campoli Appennino.
"It is among those things that are born but cannot be sown" is how Pliny the elder defined the truffle in his Natural Hystoria when he told of a citizen who asked for compensation for a broken incisor due to a bite given to a truffle inside it hid a metal coin. Rare and appreciated truffles will be the protagonists of the festival on 20 and 21 February in Campoli Appennino, a small town in Ciociaria, close to the central-southern Apennines, on the Lazio side of the Abruzzo National Park.
Centuries later, traces of an ancient past are proudly preserved in this town, where even the air smells of ancient and there are many suggestions, such as the tomolo, a huge karst doline with a funnel-shaped structure on whose edge the houses, the peaks of the Abruzzo National Park, and the spectacular Vallone Lacerno (in the photo) with the homonymous torrent, a deep canyon full of overhangs, waterfalls and crystal clear waters.
The love of the inhabitants of Campoli Appennino for truffles is lost in the mists of time, when in long solitary walks, accompanied by a faithful pig, they collected considerable quantities of the precious mushroom.
The Campolese master quarrymen contribute every year to increase the entire national production. The Campolese truffle festival is a blast from the past, which is repeated three times a year in spring, summer and winter.
Among the remains of the historic center with the medieval tower, among the cobbled streets is all a scent of dishes cooked to perfection by chefs with high-sounding names. Soups, “homemade” pasta, meat all with a sprinkling of truffles.
