The 30th edition of the Bean Festival will take place in Controne, in the province of Salerno, from 24 to 25 November 2012.
The festival has always had the aim of promoting and enhancing the territory and its products, among which the famous Controne bean stands out and whose goodness is recognized internationally. The Bean Festival brings out the ancient taverns from the past and with them the characteristic characters of the time (the Abbot and the Baron) and a great variety of traditions and specialties that involve visitors in walking through the ancient Giudea, Pavone and Dell streets. 'Bone.
Born in 1983 to enhance the local bean, of exquisite flavor and excellent cooking, the festival offers the opportunity to taste the delicious legume and all the other typical products of the area, such as oil and wine. The event involves the whole town, where costumed characters meet and where you can find the typical taverns set up for a party, a meeting place to taste the tasty dishes, all strictly based on beans, including ice cream!
The typical legumes, which boast curative virtues benefiting the kidneys and spleen, come from about eighty local producers and can also be purchased. The Controne bean is particularly prized for its high digestibility and its very thin skin. It has a round-oval shape and unique organoleptic characteristics, which make it a highly sought-after product in a niche market, consolidated over time.
It hardly breaks apart during cooking, which usually takes significantly less time than a common bean. The cultivation of legumes, much appreciated by lovers of good food, represents an important source of income for local farmers, so much so that the municipal administration, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture of the Campania Region, is committed to enhancing the 'Bean of Controne', already bearing the DOC label. The recognition required is that of the IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) mark, to guarantee the authenticity and origin of the product, which Slow Food wanted in the list of the hundred Italian specialties to be saved.
On the days of the festival, from 17.00 pm on Saturday until 1 am on the following Monday, the whole historic center will be involved in the party and the typical taverns will be set up, where visitors can taste various typical dishes, of course all based on beans: from classic escarole with beans, pasta and beans that will be prepared in two ways, there will also be rind with beans and fresellini and beans seasoned with extra virgin olive oil. An event not to be missed to keep alive the tradition of one of the many Italian specialties to be saved.
