Program 2021-2027 (Italian only)
The Regional Council ofUmbria, at the proposal of Simona Meloni, Councilor for the Promotion of Natural Systems, Protected Areas, and Parks, has initiated the procedures for Action 2.7.1 "Protection, Restoration, and Sustainable Use of Natura 2000 Sites" under the 2021-2027 Regional ERDF Program. The initiative has a total budget of €8 million, of which €4 million is earmarked for initial implementation. The initiative, included in Priority 2 "A More Sustainable Region," aims to strengthen the fight against climate change.
What does the network include?
"Our region," Councilor Simona Meloni emphasizes, "has a significant natural and biodiversity heritage to conserve and enhance. The 102 Natura 2000 sites cover 16% of the region's territory, forming part of a European network of protected areas established by the Habitats Directive, aimed at conserving natural habitats, wild flora and fauna. In Umbria, this network includes Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs), covering a total area of over 130.000 hectares. Thanks to the support of the ERDF Program and the synergy between institutions, we will be able to ensure concrete interventions to conserve these habitats and species, while promoting sustainable and responsible development. The Umbria Region reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding biodiversity and combating climate change, investing significant resources and adopting innovative strategies for the future of the region."
The proposed interventions
The initiative aims to support protection, restoration, and sustainable use of Natura 2000 sites, with a particular focus on the recovery and improvement of habitats at risk of degradation or regression. The initiatives are consistent with the Prioritized Action Framework (PAF) and the Life Imagine Umbria Integrated Project, ensuring effective and coordinated management of regional biodiversity.
These are the proposed interventions:
Habitat restoration interventions at Lake Trasimeno, designed in line with the conservation objectives and measures defined in the management plans for the affected sites. These integrated and coordinated actions aim not only at structural recovery but also at restoring the ecological processes that ensure their functionality and resilience.
The Borgo Cerreto Fish Farm has been operationalized and secured, aiming to ensure the conservation of the Valnerina Mediterranean trout population and protect the Borgo Cerreto Regional Fish Farm, which is a key public fish farm at the national level, from flood risk.
Enhancement and safety of the Sant'Arcangelo Ichthyogenic Centre, aimed at ensuring the ecological improvement of waterways and lake environments with respect to the biotic components of their characteristic biodiversity.
The overall budget for Action 2.7.1 is divided into €3.200.000 from the European Union, €3.360.000 from the State, and €1.440.000 from regional co-financing. The project factsheets were approved according to the selection criteria defined by the Monitoring Committee and received a conformity opinion from the Management Authority.
