Fences, deterrents and more
“Five projects funded for each of the parks falling within the Abruzzo region, for a total of 8,55 million euros, with the aim of implementing interventions to reduce the risk of accidents with wildlife, through dedicated crossings, fencing, deterrents and the safety of reservoirs, improving the management of organic waste in urban centers, and promoting the renaturalization and establishment of native species” – this is what the Vice President of the Regional Council of Abruzzo with responsibility for Parks and the Environment, Emanuele Imprudente, announced following the approval of the ranking of projects admitted to funding under the ERDF 2021-27 program, for the intervention “Protection of Biodiversity and improvement of natural ecosystems, strengthening ecological connections”.
A heritage to be protected and enhanced
"In an area like Abruzzo, over 35% of its total surface area is protected, thanks to European funding we have provided the Parks with concrete resources and tools to protect and enhance our natural heritage, first and foremost the Marsican brown bear, and to harmonize the relationship between humanity and nature," explains Vice President Imprudente.
The 5 funded projects
– Maiella National Park for €1.787.000,00, aimed at installing fixed fences near viaducts, underpasses, and overpasses to encourage wildlife to cross the road network and avoid entering the carriageway. This project involves the adoption of AVC-PS and "Virtual Fence" systems, i.e., the installation of electronic driver warning systems, acoustic deterrents, and virtual fencing to deter animals and avoid collisions;
– Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park for €2.000.000,00, for the construction of metal barriers to prevent Marsican brown bears from accessing the SS 17 road, which, between Castel di Sangro and Roccaraso, crosses the most important ecological corridor between the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park and the Maiella National Park. Over the past three years, two bears have died, including a female of reproductive age.
– Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park for €1.766.223,80, through actions aimed at reducing accidents with wildlife, caring for injured animals, eliminating environmental pollutants, securing wells, cisterns, and canals, managing organic waste, and strengthening and monitoring ecological connections;
– Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park for €1.382.648,86, aimed at the renaturalization of two former quarries in the Pezza plains, the safety of reservoirs and artificial pools, the construction of electric fences and deterrents, and the recovery and remediation of environmental detractors;
