A serious review
“We welcome the bill presented by Minister Lollobrigida: it is the first real step towards a serious revision of Law 157/92, which is now inadequate to address the wildlife emergency that is bringing agriculture to its knees and undermining public safety even in Abruzzo”. This is how the president of Cia-Agricoltori Italiani Abruzzo, Nicola Sichetti, comments on the meeting held in Rome between the national Cia and the Minister of Agriculture on the proposed reform of the current legislation on wild fauna. “The situation is out of control, especially in regions like ours”, continues Sichetti, “where the excessive presence of wild boars, deer and roe deer has now exceeded every threshold of tolerability. In Abruzzo we estimate damages of millions of euros every year to agricultural crops, with companies forced to stop producing or abandon entire rural areas. Not to mention the constant increase in road accidents and the cases of increasingly frequent incursions into residential areas”.
Wildlife containment
Cia Abruzzo underlines the importance of including in the bill the recognition of the active role of agricultural entrepreneurs in the containment of wild fauna. “It is essential,” adds Sichetti, “that trained and qualified farmers can intervene directly in the control plans, alongside the institutions, to protect their production and guarantee the continuity of agricultural activity. In Abruzzo, many companies find themselves isolated, without any type of effective protection: we cannot go on like this.”
Fragmentation of skills
Positive, for the Regional Confederation, also the strengthening of the role of the ATC (Territorial Hunting Areas) and the provision of greater synergy with the agricultural world. "We need a single and more authoritative direction", states Sichetti, "capable of overcoming the current fragmentation of competences. We can no longer allow responsibilities to be passed between institutions, provinces, police forces and managers of protected areas." Finally, Cia Abruzzo forcefully relaunches the need for a national fund for automatic compensation and rapid procedures for damage compensation. "It is no longer acceptable that farmers must wait years to be recognized for compensation, often partial or insufficient. The reform is a historic opportunity: now we need the political courage to complete it and the will to listen to those who guard and work the territory every day", concludes the president.
