A result of strategic importance
The Campania Region officially announces the end of the state of emergency for the African swine feverWith the unanimous recognition of the European Commission, the region has been declared an ASF-free area, and all previously existing restrictions have been lifted in accordance with Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/2388 of 24 November 2025, which amends Annex I to Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/594. This result, of strategic importance for the pig sector and the entire regional agri-food supply chain, was achieved thanks to a multidisciplinary and interinstitutional approach. The planning and implementation of measures to combat the spread of the disease involved the Directorate-General for Health Protection, through the control room of the Prevention and Public Veterinary Health Unit, and the Directorate-General for Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies of the Campania Region.
Great collaboration
The technical and operational measures adopted included strengthening epidemiological surveillance, intensifying sampling, implementing targeted monitoring campaigns, implementing biosecurity protocols on farms, and coordinating wildlife management. Constant coordination between the Region, veterinary reference centers, national institutions, the European Commission, law enforcement, and trade associations was key to the success of the intervention. A key role was played by the Veterinary Services of the Local Health Authorities (ASL), the Regional Reference Centers (CRIUV, responsible for operational coordination and technical-scientific support, and CReSan, dedicated to developing prevention strategies and promoting good biosecurity practices), the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Mezzogiorno, and the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the Federico II University of Naples. Collaboration with the Carabinieri Forestali, hunting and trade associations, hunters, and the Territorial Hunting Areas (Ambiti Territoriali di Caccia) was also crucial.
Pig farms
Specific actions implemented by the Campania Region's Directorate General for Agricultural, Food, and Forestry Policies include the December 2023 call for proposals under the Campania Regional Development Plan (RDP), which provided over €2,1 million in funding to 27 pig farms to strengthen biosecurity in pig farms. The public notice, issued in September 2023, granted extraordinary aid totaling approximately €1,1 million to 149 commercial and family pig farmers for personal consumption operating in the so-called "red zone." The lifting of restrictions now allows normal production and marketing activities to resume, reducing containment costs and encouraging the planning of new investments in the livestock sector. The Campania Region will continue to maintain and strengthen its surveillance system, strengthening biosecurity programs and promoting operator training, as well as developing integrated wildlife management plans in collaboration with hunting associations and local institutions, in order to prevent the risk of reintroduction of the disease (source: Campania Region).
