One of the most talented Italian goalkeepers
Only a single consonant distinguishes the words "hunter" and "footballer," and perhaps it's no coincidence that the connection between hunting and the sport of the green rectangle is very close. Two World Cups in particular were won by, among others, Silvio Piola , while the triumphant 2006 expedition (which marks exactly 20 years today) included a hunter with a capital H, Angelo Peruzzi. Born in 1970, originally from Blera (province of Viterbo), he is remembered as one of Italy's most talented goalkeepers, capable of making the fortunes of teams such as Juventus and Lazio: that July 9, 2006 (penalty shootout victory against France) was Gigi Buffon's assistant.
Not just a teammate
Peruzzi never played in the World Cup in Germany, but he is still remembered today as one of the most valuable presences in the Azzurri dressing room. Another world champion, Daniele De Rossi, once said: " His value goes beyond his technical ability. During the most difficult period for me during the 2006 World Cup, Peruzzi was the teammate who was closest to me ." Winning the World Cup at the age of 36 was the icing on the cake for Angelo Peruzzi, the crowning achievement of a long career studded with three Scudetti, three Coppa Italia titles, three Italian Super Cups, a UEFA Cup, a Champions League, an Intercontinental Cup, and a European Super Cup. It was after that World Cup that he retired from competitive football.
Hunting, always hunting, hunting very hard
And what does he do today? Hunting is an integral part of his days, since Peruzzi has returned to his beloved Blera and makes no secret (as he has never hidden) of his passion for the woods and everything that revolves around them. In a recent interview, he explained how he spends his life in the Viterbo area: “ I'm not at home much. I take care of my real estate interests and above all I spend time outdoors: my land, my woods, mushrooms, wild boar hunting. Family, friends, the simple things that make me feel good. Football has become like cinema, it's not for me .” Finally, a nod to one of the nicknames he was given during his career due to his size and which has to do (once again) with hunting: “ Did they call me Cinghialone? I don't like it, I prefer Tyson, Liedholm gave it to me .”
