Lots of discussions
From 5 to 7 December 2025 it took place in Maremma Regional ParkThe 13th Conference of Italian Bird Ringers was held in the province of Grosseto. Approximately 300 scholars from across Italy and several leading European research centers gathered in Maremma to discuss bird monitoring, changes related to climate change, best practices, and the results of important research. Our organization was present with our colleague Renato Carini, a bird ringer, along with several volunteers, to present two scientific posters: one on the results of the constant-effort ringing project "MonITRing," conducted in the "Le Chiesuole" nature reserve, and the other on autumn monitoring of the nightjar's migration.
The importance of habitats
The "MonITRing" project has been running for 10 years in the Le Chiesuole Natural Area in the Taro Park, with the help of volunteers. It is essential for understanding the importance of habitats for birds throughout their annual cycle; for identifying the diversity and abundance of species present, their seasonal peaks, and their characteristics; for assessing the potential range of each individual species; and for determining future interventions on local infrastructure.
The nightjar question
The nightjar project also continues at Le Chiesuole. The project, which began in 2016, involves monitoring this bird during its autumn migration through ringing. The primary goal is to study the species, examining its phenology during migration, dispersal, and survival.
