Disease control and food safety
The managerial determination on the "Guidelines on the hygiene of wild game meat and the approval of the Guidelines for the movement of captured wild boars, for the destination of wild boar meat and other game killed by hunting" has been temporarily suspended. This was announced by the regional councilors of the Basilicata Carmine Cicala (Agricultural Policies) and Cosimo Latronico (Health). The determination, initially shared with some Territorial Hunting Areas (AA.TT.CC.), was developed to respond to the emergency represented by the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Basilicata. The adoption of the Guidelines aimed to guarantee disease control and food safety, carefully addressing territorial specificities and the needs of the subjects involved.
An act of responsibility
“We believe it is important to underline – explain Cicala and Latronico – that the work carried out so far has been of great value and the determination is the result of careful consultation with local authorities and a rigorous assessment of healthcare needs. The temporary suspension therefore does not intend in any way to diminish the importance of what has been achieved, but, also in order to respond to further observations made by stakeholders, it represents an act of responsibility aimed at ensuring greater operational coordination and guaranteeing even more balanced and shared with the problem".
Any changes
The councilors reiterate their commitment to protecting public health and enhancing the agricultural and hunting activities of the region. “We remain confident that any changes and clarifications that emerge – conclude Cicala and Latronico – will allow us to reconcile everyone's needs, in full compliance with the relevant regulations and, in particular, health regulations” (source: Basilicata Region).
