The overall population
Contain the growth trend of bear population in Trentino, which according to the latest estimate formulated in the 2022 Large Carnivore Report exceeds 100 units (also taking small ones into account). The objective is the basis of the bill approved by the Provincial Council, on the proposal of the forestry councilor Roberto Failoni. For its application, the green light from the Provincial Council will be needed after the necessary passage in the competent Commission. “This is the result of an agreement with the Government, which represents an important change of pace as well as a result that looks at the specificity of our territory.
The specifications of the bill
We are thus putting a stop to the surge in the population of plantigrades, to guarantee people's safety, with the effect of also improving the working conditions of farmers and those who work in the forestry environment" observes councilor Failoni, in putting light as the bill - which modifies the 2018 law - specifies that the maximum number of problematic animals will be defined annually (pursuant to Pacobace, the national action plan) whose culling is permitted on the basis of technical - scientific and subject to authorization (necessary but not binding) from Ispra.
The “removable” specimens
The bill confirms that the President of the Province has the right to order the culling of individual problematic specimens, as a measure of permanent removal from the natural environment. Furthermore, a first application rule has been defined, for which, for 2024 and 2025 - based on the demographic analysis conducted by Ispra in 2023 to support the evaluation of possible management options - the number of potentially "removable" bears is determined in a maximum of eight specimens per year, of which no more than two adult females and no more than two adult males. Starting from 2026, the maximum quotas will be redefined with Ispra, based on the additional demographic data that will be available.
