The historical period under consideration
A recent study by the Natural History Museum in London has led to some rather surprising conclusions regarding the biodiversity. According to the Biodiversity Intactness Index, between 2000 and 2020, fauna and flora tend to decline much faster in so-called “protected areas”. How can such a correlation be explained?
Average decrease
The index calculated that biodiversity has decreased on average by 1,9 points in unprotected areas, while in protected areas the decline was 2,1 points. Also according to the British museum's estimates, scientific institutions have not properly carried out the agreement known as "30×30".
The faults of politics
The agreement in question was designed to protect Nature by establishing protected areas at sea and on land. The complaint by the Natural History Museum is quickly said: politics is focusing excessively on results in numerical terms and not practical ones, an attitude that has led to the almost total uselessness of protected areas.
