A well-established business
For 14 years now, the census of the Casentinesi Forests, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park has been taking place roaring deer: in the space of a few evenings, many people, including volunteers and technicians, meet and collaborate to listen to these animals in the night and then be able to, with the appropriate techniques, estimate the number of animals present in the protected area. The event, organized in collaboration with ISPRA, the Carabinieri Department of the Casentinesi Forests National Park, the Carabinieri Biodiversity Department of Pratovecchio, the Tuscany Region, the Emilia Romagna Region, the Union of Mountain Municipalities of Casentino, the Union of Municipalities of Valdarno and Valdisieve, the ATCs of Arezzo and Forlì Cesena, and organized by DREAm. Italia Soc. Coop., is part of the population management policies envisaged by the territorial and research bodies brought together in the eastern ACATER.
The news of 2024
This year, a new phase of the deer census has begun, with the digitalization of some of the survey operations using the “BramitAPP” method. This project is funded by the European Union – “nextgenerationeu”, as part of a cascade call for proposals aimed at monitoring, preserving, enhancing and restoring biodiversity in protected areas of the national biodiversity center “National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC)”.
An evocative experience
The census is open to enthusiasts from all over Italy who want to give their contribution by having one of the most fascinating experiences that a Park can offer. About 2000 deer present inside the National Park, of which just under 400 are males of reproductive age, involved in an ancient ritual of fighting and courtship: a suggestive experience, that of the census, for all those who want to experience the emotion of direct contact with one of the most surprising events of nature, in addition to the awareness of contributing with a small but great help to the protection of this fantastic animal. Volunteers will be able to join, supporting the experts for three nights in the census operations of male deer, scheduled for next September 26th to 28th.
Insights from the experts
During the evenings of the census at the roar, wolf monitoring will also be carried out using the wolf-howling technique, using the wide acoustic coverage of the territory, guaranteed by the operators. The occasion will be enriched by in-depth discussions with experts on the management of deer, wolves and wild fauna in general and there will be no shortage of convivial moments, which will allow all participants to exchange experiences with people who share the same passions. Registrations will be open until September 8, 2024. To download the regulations and register, you must connect to the site: http://cervo.parcoforestecasentinesi.it.
