The demonstration in Rome
Over two thousand farmers in Rome, two hundred from Umbria, to say, with Cia-Agricoltori Italiani, "Don't take away our future". Thursday 26 October the national event of agricultural entrepreneurs filled Piazza Santi Apostoli and the streets of the center with many producers and breeders arriving from all over Italy, with placards and green flags, to protest against a crisis which, from the field to the table, is causing prices to skyrocket and making farmers more poor. “We needed to turn the spotlight on the primary agricultural sector - said the president of Cia Umbria Matteo Bartolini -.
Productivity in crisis
The reality is that our members, our companies, are in serious difficulty. 2023 is marked by the almost halved productivity of wine grapes, oil and even wheat is in crisis and, in contexts like ours, deprived by depopulation and environmental degradation of rural and inland areas, there is also damage from wild fauna which, despite a regulatory update, continue to cause problems for farmers.
The solutions to look for
Nowadays, covering production costs is almost impossible for some. And this is also due to the difficulties that politics poses for us, such as the issues that are under discussion in Europe. Such as the reduction of pesticides or the change in regulations on packaging. Many of the issues that are decided in Brussels have a profound impact on the life and economic and social sustainability of our companies. We took to the streets in Rome to ask that, once the political decision-makers have been made aware, we can sit at the table with them and find solutions to keep this primary sector alive" (source: CIA).
