The importance of biosecurity
Update on the African swine fever situation in Piedmont, the importance of biosecurity, market trends, and the evolution of pork production. These were the main topics covered in the webinar "Pig Sector Update," organized by Coldiretti Piemonte, which was attended by numerous farmers. Numerous pig farmers from the Granda area participated in the online meeting, demonstrating a vibrant sector focused on the topic. The Granda area's pork supply chain comprises approximately 800 farms and nearly 900.000 animals, primarily destined for the protected circuits of Italy's main PDOs (Protected Designations of Origin) for the production of the finest Italian cured meats, such as Prosciutto di Parma and San Daniele.
EU Dossier
Luca Picco of the Piedmont Region opened the session with a presentation on the swine fever situation in Piedmont. Paolo Liberatore of Coldiretti followed with a discussion on the EU dossier on pig farming. Luca Buttazzoni, associate researcher at Crea-ZA, then discussed the marketing of pigs and the new regulations regarding emissions from livestock farms. Maurizio Gallo of Anas closed the session with a discussion on the evolution of Italian pig production.
Act promptly
"This is a useful opportunity to review the progress of African swine fever, but not only that. We have reiterated, also in light of the latest identified outbreak, the need for timely action to support the pig sector and prevent speculation by implementing and increasing wild boar containment measures," explains Enrico Nada, President of Coldiretti Cuneo. "Our companies have certainly invested significantly in biosecurity, and good results have been achieved, but it is urgent to increase depopulation because, given the National Plan prepared by the Special Commissioner for African swine fever, we are still too far from the number of culls needed to eradicate the virus from our territory."
Pork supply chain at risk
"This cross-cutting webinar clarified several issues within the sector," recalls Francesco Goffredo, Director of Coldiretti Cuneo, "because the entire local pork supply chain is at risk. Furthermore, markets are being disrupted by the war, which is causing significant price increases, with production costs skyrocketing. Therefore, it is essential, now more than ever, to monitor and prevent speculation along the supply chain."
