Stance
"Faced with an emergency that has been severely testing the survival of agricultural businesses for years, as well as seriously endangering the safety of citizens in residential areas and motorists along the region's main roads, we believe it is more than appropriate for the regional executive to take a firm stance, led by the governor, Francesco Roberti, and the councilor for agriculture, Salvatore Micone, against the controversy raised by the recent approval of the council resolution introducing further measures for the management and containment of wild fauna." This was stated by the regional president of Coldiretti MoliseClaudio Papa, who emphasizes how "incomprehensible" the emergence of a controversy over the recent regulations issued by the Region to contain the number of wild boars in the area.
Invaded territory
Furthermore, the Interministerial Decree (jointly drafted by the Ministries of Environment and Energy Security and Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry) of June 13, 2023, provides that "The regions shall implement the Extraordinary Plan for the Management and Containment of Wild Fauna in accordance with the procedures established by Law No. 157 of 1992," making its implementation a de facto legal obligation. "This has come to pass," recalls the organization's regional director, Aniello Ascolese, "after countless requests from Coldiretti for intervention in regional politics, culminating in the demonstration on July 9, 2024, when hundreds of farmers and ranchers, gathered in front of the Regional Council, loudly demanded that the Molise Region adopt an 'extraordinary' plan to combat the uncontrolled proliferation of wild boars and other wild animals that have now 'invaded' the territory, severely hindering agricultural activity and forcing the closure of dozens and dozens of businesses."
The necessary balance
To address this situation, Coldiretti requested and obtained from the regional government, thanks primarily to the sensitivity of President Roberti and Councilor Micone, the application of Article 19-ter of Law 157/92, which defines objectives and actions, as well as much broader roles and areas of intervention, completely distinguishing itself, among other things, from hunting activities. This measure completes a regulatory framework essential for reducing the number of these wild animals in the region, which has become unsustainable for agricultural activities, and for maintaining a vital balance that safeguards the forests and flora, protecting agricultural areas, biodiversity, and productive activities in the area (source: Coldiretti Molise).
