A 27-year-old text
Coldiretti Umbria has requested a postponement of the proposed amendment to Regional Regulation No. 34 of November 30, 1999, regarding provisions on the hunting of wild boar , currently on the agenda of the Third Permanent Council Commission meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 9. The request was formalized in a letter sent to the various regional bodies involved, with the aim of drawing attention to the need for a thorough assessment of the consequences the proposed amendments could have on the wild boar population and, more generally, on the entire regional territory. Coldiretti Umbria reiterates its full support for all truly effective measures to combat the uncontrolled proliferation of wild boars and the enormous damage that Umbrian farmers suffer daily to their crops and businesses. However, precisely because the problem represents a genuine emergency for the agricultural sector, Coldiretti believes that any regulatory intervention must be carefully evaluated, verifying in advance that the amendments truly improve the situation. Hunting is one of the fundamental tools for managing the species, and Coldiretti Umbria supports the need to simplify procedures, control animal numbers, and reduce the damage caused by wild boars.
The main concerns
However, it is essential to have reasonable certainty that the proposed changes will produce better results and will not, on the contrary, lead to negative effects or further difficulties in managing the species. Among the main concerns highlighted in the letter is the lack of adequate data and analysis demonstrating that the reorganization of hunting areas and the reduction of territories assigned to teams, in favor of other types of hunting, can effectively ensure more effective control of the wild boar population. According to Coldiretti Umbria, it is necessary to know and evaluate in advance all relevant information to ensure that areas not assigned exclusively to teams continue to be subject to sufficient hunting pressure. We cannot run the risk of some areas effectively becoming areas that "facilitate" the uncontrolled proliferation of wild boars. This concern takes on even greater significance in light of the current African Swine Fever emergency.
Careful management of wild animals
"At a time like this," Coldiretti Umbria emphasizes, "we cannot afford to make decisions that, even with the goal of improving the organization of hunting activities, could lead to consequences other than those desired. Careful wild boar management is now an absolute priority to protect agricultural businesses, production, and the territory, but also to address with the necessary determination the risks associated with the spread of African Swine Fever."
A thoughtful path
Hence the request to postpone any decision until the next hunting season, to allow for the presentation and analysis of all the necessary elements to verify whether the proposed changes can effectively ensure greater organizational effectiveness and more efficient harvesting capacity. Coldiretti Umbria reiterates the need for any potential reform to be the result of a thoughtful and widely shared process.
Right decisions
"The wild boar emergency requires decisions, but above all, the right ones," concludes Coldiretti Umbria. "We must intervene decisively, but without sacrificing the necessary in-depth analysis and discussion. At stake are the protection of agricultural businesses, public safety and production, the balance of the territory, and, now more than ever, the prevention of a health emergency that must not be underestimated."
