A future for businesses
Strengthening wild boar culling is now the priority for containing the spread of African Swine Fever and ensuring the future of pig farming businesses. This was the message emerging from the meeting of the Swine Section of Confagricoltura Emilia-Romagna, held in Piacenza with the participation of representatives of member companies and the national president of the Confagricoltura Pig Farming Federation, Rudy Milani. The meeting focused on the most recent measures adopted to contain ASF, starting with the extraordinary plan launched by the Emilia-Romagna Region, which allocated new resources to intensify wild boar depopulation and the search for infected carcasses.
Investments in biosecurity
"Pig farms are facing this emergency with a great sense of responsibility, investing in biosecurity and adhering to increasingly stringent regulations," said Marcello Bonvicini, President of Confagricoltura Emilia-Romagna. "We welcome the Region's commitment to strengthening wild fauna containment efforts. It is now crucial that these measures produce concrete and timely results, because reducing the wild boar population represents a crucial step towards limiting the spread of the virus and restoring prospects for businesses."
Containment of the wild
During the meeting, it was reiterated that wild fauna containment must proceed consistently and uniformly throughout the country, through effective collaboration between all stakeholders. "Biosecurity on farms is essential, but it alone is not enough," emphasized Rudy Milani, president of the National Federation of Pig Breeders of Confagricoltura. "The experience gained in the most affected areas demonstrates that only an effective reduction in the presence of wild boars, combined with systematic searches for carcasses, can halt the spread of ASF and gradually reduce the areas subject to restrictions. It is on this front that the most important challenge for the future of Italian pig farming is being played today."

Confagricoltura Emilia-Romagna will continue to closely monitor the implementation of the regional plan, confirming its full willingness to collaborate with the institutions to ensure the planned measures are implemented quickly and effectively, in the best interests of agricultural businesses and the entire pig farming supply chain.
