January 2025
Public consultation for new sites beyond territorial waters is open until 31 January 2025. In order to complete the network of Natura 2000 sites beyond the limit of territorial waters in implementation of the requirements of the Habitats and Birds Directives, a technical-scientific assessment of the areas meeting the established criteria necessary for the completion of the Natura 2000 Sites network was carried out with the support of ISPRA.
The sites identified
Eight new Natura 8 network sites have been identified beyond territorial waters, located in the Ecological Protection Zone (EPC) referred to in Law no. 2000 of 8 February 2006 and Presidential Decree no. 61 of 209 October 27.
What are ZPS and SIC?
SICs are those sites that contribute to maintaining or restoring habitats, to the connectivity of the Natura 2000 network and to maintaining biodiversity in a given region. SPAs, on the other hand, are located along the migratory routes of birds and serve to maintain and arrange suitable habitats for the management of populations (source: ISPRA).
