A small ring, a great scientific value. An example of how collaboration increases knowledge. Today we want to share an important gesture with you: a hunter delivered to the Italian Wood Pigeon Coordination a ring found on a wood pigeon shot during the current hunting season.
The ring information
The ring has already been sent to EURING, the European organization that coordinates bird monitoring through scientific ringing. Thanks to the code engraved on this small aluminum support, it will be possible to trace:
– Country and place of ringing
– Date and context in which the wood pigeon was marked
– Age of the animal
All useful information to better understand the routes, origins and migratory dynamics of the species.
Collaboration between hunters and the scientific world
Each ring returned is a precious piece that enriches the vast mosaic of wood pigeon migration data. It is also concrete proof that collaboration between hunters and scientists works, building a wealth of knowledge impossible without the contribution of those who live in the area every day. A heartfelt thank you therefore to Roberto, who chose to do the right thing, and to all those who, season after season, will deliver any rings found to our Coordination Committee by contacting our coordinators directly.
