The moment after hatching
October is the month in which most of the young people of Cory's ShearwaterTwo months after hatching, and after sunset, they leave the nest to finally begin their lives on the open sea. On October 17 and 18, 2025, on the island of San Nicola (Tremiti), two young whales, likely disoriented by the town lights, "landed" among the houses. Rescued thanks to the compassion of the locals, they were returned to the dark beach, allowing them to continue, unharmed, the journey that in a few weeks will take them over 10.000 km from their birthplace in the central-southern Atlantic Ocean.
A plaintive song
The Tremiti Islands owe their ancient name to Diomedes, a Greek hero who, according to legend, created them by throwing stones into the sea. After his death, Venus, out of pity, transformed his companions into birds, the "Diomedeans," to watch over his grave and remember him with their characteristic plaintive song.
The quality characteristics
The Cory's Shearwater is a species endemic to the Mediterranean. It weighs 500-700 g, is about 50 cm long, and has a wingspan that can exceed one meter. Its head and back are covered in gray-brown plumage, while its neck and belly are white. Its beak is yellow with a black tip, and its legs are pink. Its song resembles a baby's cry, higher-pitched in the male and deeper in the female.
