Weakened protection
In a joint statement, Annalisa Corrado, MEP and head of the Environment for the Democratic Party, and the PD deputies in the Chamber, Patrizia Prestipino and Eleonora Evi commented on the wolf downgrading"Thanks to the right-wing government, the protection of wolves is now being weakened by removing them by law from the list of particularly protected species.".
Risk of increased predation
"Not only is a species that helps contain wild boar numbers being put at risk, but by opening up wolf hunting unscrupulously, there's a risk of increasing herd predation rather than decreasing it, as scientific studies have shown. In short, a purely ideological measure has been passed, one that prioritizes the instinctive search for an enemy over a scientific approach that finds solutions.".
The next moves
"The Democratic Party voted against, in line with its vote in the Chamber of Deputies and its position repeatedly reiterated in the European Parliament. Downgrading wolves is not the solution for farmers, even though it may seem like the most immediate one. We will continue to oppose it in all relevant forums, proposing concrete solutions, as we did with our proposal on wolf hybrids.".
