Agriculture Commission
"On the Wolf management in Italy The government prefers to fuel conflicts rather than solve problems. This was confirmed in the Agriculture Committee of the Chamber of Deputies by the response of Undersecretary of the Environment Barbero to our question." This was stated in a press release distributed by the Dire news agency by the Democratic Party MPs who signed the question: Forattini, Marino, Romeo, Rossi, and Vaccari.
Alarming dimensions
"'We'll do it,' 'We'll see,' 'We'll try,' are the recurring words that demonstrate the government's fumbling in the dark," they add, "far from finding solutions to the damage caused to livestock by wolves, hybrids, and feral dogs, which have reached alarming proportions, with serious repercussions that inevitably impact public safety as well as the economic balances of farms. No response has been received regarding the tools for monitoring and assessing the damage caused to livestock by the wolf emergency. Nothing has been said about the urgent initiatives the government intends to undertake to prevent and combat wolf and hybrid attacks on livestock. Nothing has been said about the compensation and indemnity due to farmers for the damage suffered. It is not even known when the national wolf conservation and management plan, which should provide technical criteria for managing all the issues, will be approved.
The episodes repeat themselves
A draft bill has been under discussion at the State-Regions Conference for over 10 years, having been amended and supplemented several times, but the end of the process is still in sight. Meanwhile, in recent months, serious incidents have occurred in several Italian provinces where predators have massacred sheep on several farms. Due to the attacks, farmers have suffered significant economic losses, compounded by the costs of disposing of the carcasses and indirect damages, and above all by the long waiting times for reimbursement from the State. "On this entire issue," they conclude, "we as the Democratic Party have presented a bill, but starting the discussion phase is out of the question, due to the center-right majority's decision. The only result for the government has been to foment conflict that serves no one." (Source: PD Agriculture Group – DIRE Agency)
