The letter to the secretary
"Enough is enough. The Democratic Party cannot afford to slip into a simplified and hostile representation of the reality regarding wildlife management, hunting, and the rural world. It is intolerable that individual leaders or parliamentarians continue to give the impression that the PD has chosen to abandon any balance and confine itself to an ideological position, distant from communities and territories." This was stated in a letter sent to Secretary Elly Schlein by over 200 leaders, members, local administrators, and activists of the Democratic Party, active throughout the country and always committed to the life of the party, even in the most difficult times.
Rebuilding consensus and credibility
"The world of hunting and wildlife management is largely made up of people who live in inland areas, who keep the landscapes alive, maintain social relationships in rural communities, protect the environment, and contribute concretely to biodiversity and the landscape. This is where the Democratic Party must start to rebuild consensus and credibility, not with hostile slogans or positions that deny reality." The signatories recall that the 2022 electoral platform itself, approved by the Democratic Party's governing bodies, explicitly addresses the primary role of hunting in wildlife management and the need to review the effectiveness of the current law to improve it, not abolish it. "We absolutely dislike the right-wing bill on hunting, which has begun its process in the Senate. But the battle must be fought seriously, with concrete proposals and improvements. Not with a display of hostility toward an entire community of citizens, families, farmers, young people, and volunteers."
No to the gun lobby
For this reason, the signatories ask Secretary Schlein and the group leaders to promote an open and non-prejudicial dialogue, which will restore the PD's reformist and inclusive vocation. "We are the ones who cook the sausages at the Unità festivals, who host the banquets, who keep the clubs open. Certainly not the ones accused of being a gun lobby. We will also be the ones who fight for the center-left to win the next regional elections. But we want a PD that respects us and listens to us, without pressure or censorship."
