The Veneto Regional Council, upon the recommendation of Cristiano Corazzari, Councilor for Hunting, Parks, and Protected Areas, has approved a €300.000 grant to the Euganean Hills Regional Park Authority to implement the containment plan aimed at eradicating ungulates by 2025.
Control actions
"This measure supports environmental protection and human safety in an important natural area in the Veneto region," emphasizes Councilor Corazzari. "The presence of wild boars within the Park has led to the need for significant control measures over the years, including with the technical and scientific support of ISPRA (the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research). Currently, the problem persists, and this new funding will allow for the continuation of containment efforts and achieve positive results in the area."
What does the investment consist of?
The new investment covers both operational aspects, with the updating of equipment, supplies, and materials essential for capturing and transporting animals, as well as organizational and scheduling support, including software maintenance for the overall management of control activities and the ongoing training and development of the wildlife team and volunteers involved.
Limit the damage
"It is important to continue this work," the Councilor continues. "The first sightings of specimens introduced into the Park were recorded in 1997, and with the increase in the species' numbers over the years, there has inevitably been a parallel increase in damage to both the natural and human environments. Continuing wild boar control efforts is therefore essential to limit the damage to production activities and biodiversity. It is also important to remember that wild boar control is consistent with national requirements to combat the potential risk of spreading African Swine Fever (ASF)." (Source: Veneto Region)
