Many implications
As you know, the European Commission is working to limit the use of lead in ammunition and in fishing gear under the EU chemicals legislation (REACH). The proposal has been under discussion in the EU's REACH Committee since February 2025, where Member States and the Commission are examining its technical, socioeconomic, and practical implications for hunters, sport shooters, and fishermen.
Two separate files
In recent weeks, the Commission decided to split the proposal into two separate dossiers: one concerning lead in fishing gear and the other lead in ammunition. This decision may reflect the growing complexity and political sensitivity of the ammunition dossier.
Geopolitical concerns
The restriction on lead in fishing gear is now expected to be approved soon. However, the dossier on ammunition remains under discussion in the REACH Committee, as most Member States do not yet support the Commission's proposal, primarily due to geopolitical concerns and the broad socioeconomic impact, as highlighted by Agriculture and Environment Ministers in recent months. For FACE, any future measures must be realistic and technically feasible (Source: FACE).
