Closing of the hunting season
We report below the opinion of the Lombardy regional hunting federation: “The scientific and regulatory debate on the closure of the hunting season is enriched by a new chapter after the publication of a study, conducted by the University of Milan in collaboration with LIPU, according to which climate change is pushing birds to bring forward their pre-nuptial migration”.
Bird protection
This hypothesis, if confirmed, would force an early hunting closure to comply with European regulations protecting birds during their return to their nesting sites. However, Federcaccia has intervened forcefully in the national press, through its Research Center, to question the soundness of these conclusions.
A systematic review
The study referenced by Federcaccia Lombardia analyzed 23 huntable bird species based on over 4 million data points from the citizen science platform Ornitho.it to assess the timing of huntable bird migration in Italy, with particular attention to the start dates of pre-breeding migration, which are essential for determining the hunting closure date.
