Great astonishment
We are shocked to learn that the Tuscany Region has once again proposed including the wood pigeon among the species covered by the Special Control Plan. This position we firmly reject and consider unacceptable, especially because it affects a species of great naturalistic and hunting value during an extremely delicate period such as breeding season, putting the breeding populations present in our territory at risk. For this reason, we would like to thank and share the detailed and well-documented response prepared jointly by the FIDC-UCT Provincial Section of Florence, together with ANUU Migratoristi and Enalcaccia, a document that fully reflects the position of Federcaccia Toscana – Unione Cacciatori Toscani.
An axiom that doesn't hold up
It is unjustifiable to continue to uphold the axiom that wildlife cannot coexist in harmony with agriculture and the environment. Modern wildlife management must be based on scientific data, accurate monitoring, prevention, and proper damage assessment, not on the identification of a single species as a scapegoat. We therefore reject this new attack on the Wood Pigeon and reiterate our opposition to any attempt to include it in the Tuscan Special Control Plan. The critical issues facing agriculture deserve concrete responses based on prevention, collaboration between institutions, farmers, and the hunting community, and responsible management of wildlife, not measures lacking adequate technical and scientific basis.
Management defense
Federcaccia Toscana – Tuscan Hunters' Union will continue to advocate for balanced, sustainable, and biodiversity-friendly wildlife management, while protecting hunting and promoting constructive dialogue with the agricultural community. The wood pigeon must not once again become the target of decisions lacking adequate scientific basis.
