The future of agriculture
Top priority: approval of Tuscany's Wildlife Plan . Ideally, improve it to ensure the future of regional agriculture, which has been grappling with the ungulate and wildlife crisis for too many years, even decades. This is highlighted by the CIA (Italian Farmers' Association) of Tuscany on the eve of the four-day Regional Council meeting at the end of July (starting today), which also includes the Regional Wildlife Plan on the agenda.
Containment and control
"There's no more time to waste," emphasizes Valentino Berni, president of CIA Tuscany. "The Wildlife Plan must be approved now. This Wildlife Plan," he specifies, "absolutely needs improvement in terms of ungulate density, which must be sustainable for the environment, the land, and agriculture; wildlife containment and control measures; prevention of damage to crops; and full compensation for damage suffered by agricultural businesses. At the same time, effective management must be ensured, including interventions in hunting-free areas, nature reserves, and parks. I call on regional councilors to approve the document with a great sense of responsibility, to save the land and agricultural businesses throughout Tuscany."
Answers long awaited
"But," President Berni reiterated, "it must be approved urgently to provide answers to the ungulate problems that farmers have been waiting too long for, and to allow them to plan and invest." "The Plan," Berni emphasized, "is a general planning tool and defers its specific implementation to the necessary subsequent actions that the Region will have to adopt. We recommend that these be implemented with a comprehensive approach, taking into account all the aspects and sensitivities affecting the stakeholders."
