The 2003 massacre
A lot of time has passed, but few have forgotten what went down in history as the "Nasiriyah attack". On 12 November 2003, precisely in the Iraqi locality, a tanker truck full of explosives exploded in front of the entrance to the Maestrale base, headquarters of the Italian MSU of the Carabinieri, subsequently causing the explosion of the ammunition depot and the death of several people, including Carabinieri, military and civilians. Among those injured there was also Maurizio Lucchesi, a lieutenant now on leave who was recently the protagonist of a particular story linked to the possession of weapons.
The sentence of the TAR
According to the Prefecture of Perugia, a ban on the possession of weapons and ammunition should have been imposed for Lucchesi, in addition to withdrawal of weapons licence for personal defense. The man, awarded the Gold Medal by the President of the Republic in memory of the victims of terrorism, only regained possession of the license last March 19, when a sentence was pronounced in his favor by the TAR of Umbria .
The reasons for the defense
The disputed incidents both date back to 2019. In the first case, Lucchesi had fired a gunshot into the air to break up a fight between armed foreigners, also blocking one of them. In the second episode, however, the former policeman had argued with a colleague who had then reported him, stating that he had been attacked and threatened. According to the Prefecture, the man could not be considered reliable, but his defense (later accepted) was based on the fact that he had served in the Carabinieri for 26 years and that he had self-control even in the most stressful situations, such as international conflicts.
