Predations and floods
The project, carried out in the Marche Region by the ACMA Hunters Association, was created to encourage the reproduction of mallard ducks in bodies of water through the installation of artificial nests . The nest structure is welcoming to the mallard species and provides optimal conditions for successful hatching, addressing various issues, such as nest predation by opportunistic species, as well as flooding of the nests themselves due to rising water levels.
Crows and foxes
The 2025 breeding success report, as can be seen from the attached poster, highlighted excellent potential for success in terms of occupancy, hatching, and fledging of the birds. However, a more comprehensive evaluation would provide the basis for issuing an alert regarding predation outside the nest. Collaborators noted numerous instances of ground predation, mostly by species such as corvids, herons, and foxes.
Control plan
ACMA Marche uses this alert as a guideline to recommend a precise implementation of the sacred ibis control plan, as observers have reported that the species has preyed on large numbers of ducklings. Nests are effective in increasing reproductive success, but at the same time, it is urgent to regulate the control of opportunists to achieve satisfactory results.
