The immortalized species
La nesting The hunt continues, and these days we're witnessing the magical moment of hatching of various species at numerous fixed waterfowl hunting posts, including the mallard, a species that breeds throughout Italy, with the highest concentrations in the North and Center. In these two videos, one filmed in the Marche region and one in Umbria, we can admire two mallard broods born within the hunting lakes, known as oases of biodiversity in environments exploited for agriculture and human purposes in general.
Artificial nests
The video filmed in Umbria also shows sacred ibises (an invasive alien species) attempting to approach mallard duck chicks, which fortunately escape, in a scene that appears to be a learning process, guided by the mother. This brood also hatched inside an artificial nest (nest tube) placed by the hunter-managers of the hide.
The role of these wetlands
Two more confirmations of the role of wetlands created and maintained by hunters in bird conservation, not only during migration but also during the crucial breeding season.
