Technical-scientific comparison
“The Veneto Region has worked with great attention and responsibility in defining the hunting calendar 2026-2027 In agreement with ISPRA and the National Wildlife and Hunting Technical Committee, the aim is to achieve a balance between hunting and the protection of the regional wildlife heritage. Continuous technical and scientific dialogue with the relevant bodies has enabled the development of a calendar based on updated data, quantitative analyses, and timely monitoring of harvests.
ISPRA opinions
Hunting Councilor Dario Bond announced that the Veneto Regional Council today approved the regional hunting calendar for the 2026-2027 season, pursuant to Article 16 of Regional Law 50/1993 "Regulations for the Protection of Wild Fauna and Hunting," having received the required advisory opinions from the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) and the National Wildlife and Hunting Technical Committee (CTFVN). The provision regulates the species permitted for hunting, the corresponding hunting seasons, the number of permitted hunting days per week, the maximum daily and seasonal bag allowances, and the hours of operation for hunting.
Less litigation?
The approach adopted by the Region in drafting the Calendar represents a continuation of the methodologies developed by the Administration, which, for several seasons, has aimed to reduce disputes arising during the latter. This objective is pursued through increasingly careful and timely assessments of hunting effort and the actual impact of harvests on the hunted species; all of this is duly supported, at a technical and scientific level, within the provision approving the hunting calendar. Aspects of the calendar that comply with the ISPRA opinion include the omission of the early opening of the wood pigeon season, a choice that will allow for two decades of hunting and maintain the closing of the hunting season on January 31st instead of January 20th; the closing of the song thrush season on January 10th; the halving of the skylark bag, set at 5 daily birds and 25 seasonal birds per hunter; the closure of the woodcock hunting season on January 10th; the inclusion of the pochard, tufted duck and lapwing species in compliance with the ISPRA guidelines and the contents of the respective national management plans.
Peculiarities of the territory
The calendar also includes the closing of the hunting season for waterfowl on January 31, 2027, instead of January 20, with the exception of Mallard, Gadwall, and Moorhen, whose hunting season will end on January 20. The closing of the hunting season for Fieldfare and Redwing is confirmed as January 31, 2027, instead of January 10. The possibility of additional hunting days in October and November for migratory birds only is confirmed. "The work carried out demonstrates the Region's desire to combine hunting tradition, environmental sustainability, and biodiversity protection. The decisions taken are the result of in-depth technical and scientific studies that take into account the unique characteristics of the Veneto region and the need to ensure responsible management of wild fauna, in full compliance with national and European regulations," concludes Bond. The 2026-2027 regional hunting calendar will, for the first time, be published well ahead of the deadlines set by industry regulations (source: Veneto Region).
