Proposed regulation
Tuesday 18 November, Luciano rossi, President of the Italian Clay Pigeon Shooting Federation (FITAV) and the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF), spoke at the European Parliament in Brussels (BEL) during the panel "Restricting Lead in Ammunition in Europe: Implications and Consequences" regarding the proposed regulation restricting the use of lead in ammunition in Europe. He was joined by Dr. Stefano Rosi, Coordinator of the Fitav Technical and Legal Committee, who has long been involved in studying the issue. Before MEPs, President Rossi reiterated his concerns regarding the content of the proposed regulation, which in its current form imposes severe restrictions on shooting sports. Such far-reaching changes, he emphasized, in such a deep-rooted and complex international federation, risk creating imbalances at the international level, for example, athletes from continents not affected by the regulations would find themselves enjoying an objective advantage in preparation and competition performance compared to those who are subject to the new rules.
A shared agreement
The leading figure in Italian and international clay pigeon shooting expressed a favorable position regarding the strengthening of procedures for recycling and remediating used lead, in line with the guidelines already outlined by the International Olympic Committee. Concluding his remarks, Rossi expressed the hope of reaching a shared agreement that provides an adequate degree of flexibility, allowing different local organizations to apply the regulations in accordance with their specific needs and requirements, after analyzing each situation on a case-by-case basis.
The others present at the panel
Also speaking at the panel with President Rossi were Riho Terras, Estonian MEP and panel organizer, Valentina Bertato of the European Commission's Directorate-General for the Environment, Dr. Ruth Cromie, an expert from ECHA (European Chemicals Agency), and Thierry Jacobs, President of AFEMS (Association of European Sports Equipment Manufacturers) (source: FITAV).
