Recent approval
Mr Francesco Bruzzone, a member of the League and national head of the Department of Wildlife Management and Hunting Activities, has made his latest initiative known: “I have presented a question to Parliament with the aim of bringing to the attention of the Minister of the Environment and the Minister of Agriculture the measures recently approved by the Emilia-Romagna Region, which aim to cull 55 thousand wood pigeons during the nesting period”.
Spring migration
“I believe that the Emilia-Romagna Region is wrongly claiming damage to agriculture due to wood pigeons, confusing the same species with the domestic pigeon. In fact, the damage caused by wood pigeons is not as significant as they claim. Furthermore, everyone should know that the wood pigeon is a migratory bird and that therefore the sedentary subjects in that region, as in other parts of our country, are greatly increased during the months of March and April when the spring migration arrives and then moves on to the reproductive phase. Such indiscriminate killing, which is not hunting, would affect the wood pigeon population also in other areas of Italy and beyond”.
Proper management of species
"I therefore asked that the Emilia-Romagna Region withdraw that part of the provision concerning the wildlife control of the wood pigeon and, with this parliamentary question, I wanted to directly involve the competent Ministries. As is known, hunters always care about the correct management of huntable species. The wood pigeon is one of these, but it must be managed correctly because it is an important wildlife resource that does not deserve to be trampled on by bizarre regional initiatives such as the one activated by Emilia-Romagna".
