Innovation meets nature
Digital and biodiversity, when innovation meets nature. Tuscany, the only regional administration at the national level, brought its experience to the forefront of the workshop "New technologies applied to wildlife monitoring," which took place in Val di Pejo and was organized by the Stelvio National Park, by the Wildlife Service of the Autonomous Province of Trento and the MUSE. Invited to share its best practices, Tuscany illustrated the most innovative applications implemented by the regional fish and wildlife sector, starting with the Toscaccia app and the digital hunting license. Active since 2017 and already chosen by approximately 20% of Tuscan hunters, the digital tool replaces the paper one, allowing for an immediate flow of data on derogated species and hunting dynamics, useful for monitoring and studying migration.
Active search for carcasses
A significant section of the presentation was also dedicated to the use of the app to combat African swine fever (ASF). As directed by the Special Commissioner, those operating in restricted areas must use the app to record depopulation activities, active carcass searches, and control interventions. The data is automatically forwarded to the local health authorities (ASL) and the commissioner's office, ensuring timely and transparent management of health emergencies. During the workshop, Tuscan technicians conducted practical demonstrations, allowing participants to experience the application and demonstrating live data processing on the management portal. This approach sparked great interest among regional, park authorities, and participating institutions, addressing the growing need for digital tools for data collection and reporting.
Modern tools
The vice president and councilor for agriculture stated that Tuscany was a pioneer in digital innovation applied to wildlife management. Tuscany's experiences are considered a model at the national level: this means that the path taken, based on modern, transparent, and easily usable tools, is the right one. Innovation is not just a technical choice, but a way to ensure more effective and sustainable management of our natural resources (Source: Tuscany Region – ToscanaNotizie).
