GENERAL APPEARANCE: the Irish Setter must be of sporty gait, noble appearance and amiable expression.
STANDARDS / CHARACTER:
HEAD: long and dry, without any heaviness at the level of the ears.
CRANIAL REGION Skull: oval in shape between the ears, of great cerebral capacity, very evident occipital protuberance. Stop: quite obvious.
FACIAL REGION Truffle: acajou, brown or black in color. Well opened nostrils. Nasal bridge: straight. Muzzle: not small nor faint, of moderate depth, rather square. Good length between the stop and the tip of the nose. Lips: they must not be pending. Jaws / Teeth: the jaws must be of the same length; non-hanging lips. No prognathism allowed. Eyes: hazelnut or brown, not too big. Almond shaped. Ears: of moderate size and fine texture, set low, set well back and hanging but not in contact with the cheeks.
NECK: of medium length, very muscular but not too thick. Slightly arched, no trace of baleen.
BODY: well proportioned Shoulders: long, very oblique and pointed. Lumbar region: muscular, slightly arched. Chest: well rounded ribs which give great lung capacity. Chest as deep as possible, but rather narrow when viewed from the front.
TAIL: rather low junction, of medium length, proportionate to the body. Strong at the root, it tapers progressively and ends with a fine tip. It must be carried as exactly as possible as an extension of the back line or immediately below it.
PLUS Straight and sinewy with good bone.
FOREQUARTERS Strong, with flat and straight bones. Shoulder: Shoulder blades long and very sloping back, flat and close to the withers. Never heavy. Elbow: free to move, neither open nor closed. Pastern: upright.
BACK LIMBS Long and muscular from hip to hock, strong and short from hock to ground. The joints of the stifle of the hock are very elastic and must not be deviated neither in nor out. Stifle: well angled.
FEET : small, very firm; strong, tight and arched fingers. Oval shape. Well filled digital tubercles; thick bearings.
GAIT / MOVEMENT: regular, loose and frank, with strong drive from the hindquarters.
COAT HAIR: head, front part of the limbs and ends of the ears have a short and fine hair, but on all the rest of the animal it must be of medium length, flat, as far as possible not wavy or curled; the fringes of the upper part of the ears must be long and silky, those in the limbs are long and fine. The abdomen is equipped with a beautiful fringe that can be extended up to the chest and throat. Long interdigital hairs. Tail provided with a nice medium length fringe that is shortened towards the tip. All bangs should be as straight and flat as possible. Color: golden acajou without any trace of slate; a white spot on the bib, in the throat or between the fingers, a small front star or a narrow stripe on the nose bridge and head are not grounds for disqualification
SIZE Height at the withers Males: 61 to 66 cm. Females: a little less
WEIGHT: from 20 to 30 kg
DEFECTS Any deviation from the above must be considered a defect to be penalized according to its severity
NB Males must have normal-looking testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
