Important proportions: the height at the withers, in males, ranges from 60 to 70 cm, and in females from 58 to 65 cm. Construction tending to the square. The length of the head is equal to 4/10 of the height at the withers, its width measured at the zygomatic arches is less than half of its total length.
Behavior and character: sociable, docile and patient character. Suitable for hunting on all terrains, very resistant to fatigue, enters with ease into brambles and cold water, has strong aptitudes for a broad and fast trot and is naturally an excellent retriever.
Head: the directions of the upper longitudinal axes are divergent.
Cranial region
Skull: Oval shaped in sagittal sense to roof, with very developed occipital protuberance and very marked interparietal crest. The frontal sinuses are not very developed, forward and upward; the superciliary arches are not too high, the stop is just hinted at, while the mid-frontal suture is well pronounced.
Facial region
Truffle: on the same line as the nose bridge; voluminous, with a spongy appearance, with a very large and very rounded upper margin; pinkish-flesh colored pigment in white subjects, a little more charged in white-orange ones, brown in roan brown ones. Seen in profile it protrudes on the front vertical of the lips. The nostrils are large and protruding.
Muzzle: the length is equal to the length of the skull; the height, measured at the middle, is one third of its length. The profile of the nasal bridge is slightly ram or rectilinear; the lateral faces of the muzzle are parallel, so its front face has a square aspect. The upper lips, rather thin, form an open angle under the nose, in the front they are rounded, cover the lower ones and reach the commissure with an evident fold. The lower profile of the muzzle is given by that of the upper lips, and its lowest point is given by the commissure.
Jaws: strong, of normal development. The branches of the mandible are very slightly curved in the central part of their length. The cheeks are dry.
Teeth: dental arches that match each other, the incisors close in scissors and pincers.
Eyes: they are large, wide open and spaced apart, the eyelid rim is rounded, the eyeball is neither prominent nor sunken, the eyelids adhere perfectly. It tends to be in a subfrontal position. The color of the iris is ocher, more or less dark, depending on the color of the coat.
Ears: almost triangular in shape, in length it exceeds the lower line of the throat by no more than 5 cm. in width it goes from the junction point of the junction of the head to the neck up to the middle of the zygomatic arch; the anterior margin adheres to the cheek, not crumpled, but turned inwards; the tip of the ear is slightly rounded. Worn almost constantly relaxed, he has little erectile. The cartilage is thin, its skin is covered with dense hair, mixed with a longer and sparse hair, which thickens at the edges.
Neck: Strong and muscular with clear demarcation of the nape, it blends harmoniously with the shoulders. Its length must not be less than 2/3 of the total length of the head; its perimeter reaches a third of the height at the withers. The lower edge features a slight split chin strap.
Trunk
Construction tending to the square.
Back: withers not too high. Points of the shoulder blades apart. The upper line of the trunk consists of two lines: one inclined almost straight, which goes from the withers to the eleventh dorsal vertebra, the other slightly convex, joins with the region of the loins, solid and well arched. The rump is broad, long, well muscled and sloping, forming an angle of 30 °, - 35 ° with the horizon; measured on the inclination of the coxale. The chest is broad and descends at least to the level of the elbows, deep, well convex at half of its height. The transversal diameter has its maximum development in the middle of its height, it decreases significantly in the direction of the sternum, without the thorax being carinated. The ribs are well sprung, oblique, with large intercostal spaces. The false ribs are long, oblique and well open. The loins slightly convex, have well developed muscles in width. They are a little less than a fifth of the height at the withers in length, their width almost equal to their length. The lower line tends to be horizontal at the sternum, while it rises slightly in the ventral region. The tail is particularly large at the root, and carried horizontally or low, and without fringes. It is cut to leave a length of 15-25 cm.
ARTS OF THE DOG: Spinone Italiano
FOREQUARTERS
Seen from the front they are perfectly parallel to each other and perpendicular to the ground. Seen in profile the forearm is vertical, the pastern slightly extended.
Shoulder: strong, long, a quarter of the height at the withers, with an inclination on the horizontal of about 50 °; with respect to the median plane of the body the points of the shoulder blades are not very close to each other. The shoulder is equipped with well developed muscles and is free to move. The scapula-humeral angle is around 105 °.
Arm: oblique on the horizontal, with an inclination of about 60 °. Its direction is almost parallel to the median axis of the body. He is well muscled.
Forearm: long a little more than a third of the height at the withers, vertical seen both from the front and from the side. Strong bone. The posterior tendon is strong and detached so that the carpiocubital groove is evident. The elbows are located in a plane parallel to the median plane of the body. The point of the elbow should be somewhat forward of the lowered perpendicular from the posterior tip of the shoulder blade. The distance from the elbow to the ground is equal to 50% of the height at the withers. Carpus: follows the vertical line of the forearm.
Pastern: flat and follows the straight line of the forearm seen from the front: in profile it appears slightly inclined. Its length is about 1/6 of the height of the limb at the elbow.
Feet: round crops, with fingers well joined together and arched; covered with short and dense hair also in the interdigital spaces. The dry and hard soles, more or less pigmented depending on the coat. Strong and curved nails and well pigmented, but never black.
BACK LIMBS
Seen from the thigh profile with a slightly convex back profile, the various segments are well angled to each other, the metatarsus must be perpendicular to the ground, seen from behind they are parallel and perpendicular to the ground.
Thigh: the length must not be less than one third of the height at the withers. Its width reaches 3/4 of the length. It is very muscular. Its direction is slightly oblique from top to bottom and from back to front. The posterior margin is slightly convex.
Leg: the length is slightly greater than that of the thigh: the inclination is about 55-60 ° on the horizontal and is equipped with lean muscles in the upper part; the leg groove well marked and evident.
Hock: the faces are very wide. The distance from the tip is about one third of the height at the withers. The angle of the ankle joint is about 150 °.
Metatarsus: the length is equivalent to the distance of the hock from the ground. Robust and dry. From whichever side you look at it, it appears vertical. On the inner face there may be a simple and articulated spur.
Feet: with all the characteristics of the previous ones, but slightly more oval.
Pace: loose step, in hunting, wide and fast trot, interspersed with gallop times.
Skin: close to the body. It must be thick and dry. It is thinner on the head, throat, groin, armpits and back of the trunk, soft at the elbows. It forms just two folds that start on the branches of the jaw and disappear at the height of the first half of the neck (chin strap). When the head is lowered, a fold is barely visible which descends from the temporal angle of the eye to the cheek, provided in the posterior margin of an ear of hair. The pigment of the skin varies with the variation of the spots of the coat. The external mucous membranes must be related to the color of the coat.
Spinone Italiano: Cloak
HAIR: 4-6cm long. on the trunk, shorter on the bridge of the nose, on the head, on the ears, on the front parts of the limbs and on the feet.
