Hunting Reform: Let's Clear the Air! In recent months, the debate over the reform of Law 157/1992 (the framework law governing hunting) has heated up the media and social media. To shed light on the matter, lawyer Lorenzo Bertacchi (Federcaccia's legal department) has debunked, point by point, the main "fake news" circulating online.
The facts in detail
Here are the things:
- No “shoot-all” law: The only new species introduced are the city pigeon and the greylag goose, which can already be hunted throughout Europe.
- Wolves and Ibex: Nothing changes for wolves (they become "unhuntable" under EU regulations, but the penalties for killing them are tripled). Ibex, however, has been excluded from the reform: it will remain protected.
- Hunting on the beach? A hoax. Safety distances, the Penal Code, and beach regulations remain unchanged. The reference to state maritime property serves only to protect traditional hunting in areas such as lagoons and river mouths.
- Technology and safety: The use of electronic optics and thermal imaging for selective hunting is clarified. This European standard ensures greater accuracy in identifying game and greater safety.
- No slaughter beyond the deadline: The absolute ban on hunting during the breeding and mating migration of birds remains in place.
What will happen
So what's really changing? The real changes for hunters are the abolition of exclusive hunting options and, above all, the recognition of the ecological and eco-sustainable role of hunting directly in the bill. Debate is legitimate, but addressing the texts and not slogans would be a step forward for everyone.
