Regional resolution
The Regional Council of Lazio, chaired by Francesco Rocca, on the proposal of the Councilor for Agriculture, Hunting and Budget, Giancarlo Righini, approved with a resolution of the Council "The Regional Plan for Urgent Interventions for the Management, Control and Eradication of African Swine Fever in the Regional Territory (PRIU)" already sent, in August, to Ispra and Cerep for the mandatory opinion, adapting it to the observations received.
What the plan entails
The updated Plan provides for greater attention to farmers for the defense of their land and crops, since they will be able to personally take care of the wild boar's capture, where authorized, or even delegate third parties. Furthermore, agricultural entrepreneurs, owners or managers of the land will be able to assist in control interventions also in protected areas. The use of the "braccata capture" technique is also foreseen, even if in a reduced form, exclusively in agro-forestry-pastoral areas in order to contain damage to agricultural production and in the presence of tall crops.
Compensation for damages
The Plan also provides for the regulation of a regional supply chain for wild boar meat, encouraging its consumption and promoting conscious marketing. Part of the proceeds from the sale of slaughtered animals may also be used to compensate for damage caused by the species or to encourage control activities. Finally, with the approval of the new PRIU, the possibility is provided for interested parties to report the failure to implement the Plan to the competent regional authorities so that they can identify the appropriate actions to be taken.
Containment of wild boars
"With the new Plan - explains Councilor Righini - we also respond to the legitimate requests of farmers who claimed to want to be on the front line in the fight to contain wild boars that, over time, have caused considerable damage to their activities. We think we can achieve the ambitious goals imposed by the Extraordinary Plan of the Commissioner thanks to the synergic work between the farmers themselves, the hunting world, those responsible for protected areas as well as the Agriculture and Environment directorates, which to date have obtained excellent results both in the free zones and in the infected zones, so much so that the European Commission has evaluated the possibility for Lazio to exit the restrictions" (source: Lazio Region).
