Four more years
Thanks to the intense work done to improve the original proposal, the transition period for lead-containing ammunition has been extended from 3 to 7 years . In this regard, we are publishing the communication from FACE, the European representation of hunting associations from various EU member states, of which the Italian Hunting Federation is also a member.
REACH Committee
Here is the text:
The EU's REACH Committee has approved the European Commission's proposal to restrict the use of lead in firearm ammunition. Over the past 18 months, Member States have worked intensively to improve the Commission's original proposal. The final text differs significantly from the initial draft. Specifically, the transition period for lead-containing hunting ammunition has been extended from three to seven years. Furthermore, the proposed restriction on single-ball lead bullets has been removed from the proposal, in line with broader EU political priorities, including defense and security.
Policy recommendations
Most of the key policy recommendations put forward by FACE have been incorporated into the final proposal, resulting in a more proportionate and practical approach for the European hunting community. The proposal will now enter a three-month review period in the European Parliament and the Council. Given the significant changes introduced by Member States, it seems unlikely that the European Parliament will oppose the proposal.
The necessary work
"The focus must now be on implementation. Significant work will be needed to support hunters in the transition to lead-free shot. Best practices from countries that have already successfully completed this transition should be learned, while maintaining high levels of hunting participation."
