Community legislation
The environmental association Gruppo d'Intervento Giuridico (GrIG) has submitted (30 August 2024) a specific appeal to the European Commission for violation of the Community legislation on the protection of wild birds (directive no. 09/147/CE) against the Sardinian regional hunting calendar 2024-2025 (Decree of the Department n. 14/4004 of 22 August 2024).
The violations found
According to the GrIG, there are numerous violations, including the hunting of the Turtle Dove, whose population is reportedly in sharp decline, in contrast with the recommendation to suspend hunting requested by the European Commission, and the hunting of the Lapwing, in the absence of a national management plan and classified as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List.
Aquatic bird species
Also in conflict with Community legislation is the closure of the hunting season on 30 January 2025 for numerous species of aquatic and migratory birds, already the subject of case EUP(2023)10542 which concerns hunting calendars that provide for the hunting of the species Song Thrush, Redwing, Fieldfare, Teal and Mallard after the start of the migration period indicated in Community guides and documents (KCD 2021) on the matter.
