The problem relating to wild boars affects all regions of our country and the Liguria makes no exceptions, indeed the emergency is even more evident than in other areas of Italy. It is no coincidence that the Regional Nucleus of Environmental Wildlife Surveillance be busy as never before. As disclosed by Alexander Piana, Deputy Governor with responsibility for Agriculture, the first 7 months of 2022 were characterized by an impressive number as regards the culling of wild animals: in fact, we are talking about 700 specimens, which means that the average is 100 wild boars per month.
These are the words of Piana about that: "Regional agents face extremely complex and risky interventions, with a very high level of professionalism and qualification. It is regrettable to note that, for a small part of public opinion, their activity is confused with hunting, a discipline carried out according to times, methods and with well-established limits. Our offices receive daily requests for intervention to deal with, especially in summer when drought and the birth of litters amplify the movement of ungulates towards the city. In the course of 2021 in Liguria about 1500 wild boars were removed from the nucleus, which threatened public safety or endangered the protection of agricultural crops".
Il regional vice president he added: "The need to intervene on a daily basis in such emergency situations, in addition to the remaining wildlife management activities (ranging from the recovery of injured or distressed wildlife, to the monitoring of the presence of wolves, assistance to breeders and inspection of predation ) in fact leave the staff of the nucleus little time to devote to that function of garrison of the agro-forestry-pastoral territory for which it was primarily established. Once the national plan for the eradication of Psa, currently under examination by the European Commission, has been definitively approved, efforts will have to be intensified to implement the eradication measures provided for by the relevant European legislation.".
