Hunting and Fauna in Liguria, a question was presented to the Regional Council regarding the problems created by Roe deer and wild boars.
During the session of the Ligurian Regional Council on 5 February last, the regional councilor Maurizio Torterolo presented a question, also signed by Edoardo Rixi and Francesco Bruzzone, in which he asked for the initiatives of the Region "to put a stop to the proliferation of the number of roe deer in the province of Savona and, in particular, in Vallebormida and what checks have been carried out on the matter by the Liguria Region ".
Bruzzone denounced that road accidents caused by Caprioli, which also involve a high cost because the responsibility lies with the Region which is required, in part and in conjunction with the Province, to compensate them. The councilor then recalled that, last year, a citizens' committee was formed in Osiglia where the roe deer, attracted by the headlights of passing cars, and encouraged by those who brought them food on the side of the road, had often jumped on the roadway. causing up to 4 accidents in one day. To stem the phenomenon it was hypothesized to equip the street with simulators to keep animals away and to enact ordinances to prohibit the administration of food.
The section of Cairo Montenotte of Coldiretti - added the director - has registered a increase in claims for damages to crops, caused by Roe deer, which feed on the sprouts of tree plants. Torterolo called for "selective felling plans to contain the number of roe deer and to limit the damage caused to woods, crops and vehicles".
The Councilor for the Environment Renata Briano replied for the council: "The spread of ungulates, in addition to road accidents, causes serious damage to agriculture for this, together with Councilor Barbagallo, we will organize a table with the presence of the provinces to address the issue. As is known, the appeals to the TAR interrupted the selective culling activity, among other things, creating imbalances between male and female males in the fauna of roe deer and wild boar ”.
Continuing, Briano affirmed, "There is no doubt: more hunting is needed, but the control of the fauna is the responsibility of the provinces. The latter have the possibility, on the basis of article 36 of law 29/1994, subject to the opinion of Ispra, to launch specific selective killing plans and to regulate the hunting of ungulates even in periods other than those provided for in the hunting calendar. They can do it for the protection of the historical and artistic heritage and of zoo-agro-forestry productions. These plans can be implemented by the hunting guards employed by the provinces, by the voluntary guards, by hunters in possession of the qualification of assistant in the control of ungulate species ".
Councilor Briano then added, “For another the Region distributes 90% of the revenue from the hunting card to the provinces, which has been providing decreasing revenues for some years but which is in any case attested to above a million and a half euros. At the end of last year, 20 thousand euros were committed to the province of Genoa for a project relating to the prevention of road accidents as part of the national road safety plan and we are available to evaluate any proposals received by the Province of Savona. In fact, our calculations show that the percentage of realization of hunting plans in the province of Savona is only 55 percent. In the face of such a modest result, it is useful to take advantage of all the opportunities permitted by current legislation ".
Councilor Maurizio Torterolo then replied, “I am satisfied with the idea of the two councilors to open a table with the other bodies. We hope to have positive results, because the problems in the hinterland are serious ”.
