Diseases and more
“The approval of this motion is good, it comes from the requests of the territory to defend the local fish fauna from the serious depopulation due to the Cormorant predation which has long since settled from marine to lake areas. It is therefore urgent to promote a census of the cormorant population to understand the extent of their presence and the ecological decline that each ecosystem can sustain”. “Not secondary is the problem of the spread of diseases that pass from avian fauna to fish fauna, and even reach humans. In fact, the cormorant acts as a vehicle for the transmission of “Eustrongylide”, a parasite whose proliferation will soon reach the levels of PSA”.
Species at risk of extinction
"The situation worsens further if we consider the coexistence of the cormorant, the wels catfish and the greater merganser, which, fighting for resources, put many protected species at risk of extinction: the marble trout, the grayling, the barbel, the bullhead, the bleak, the pigo and the savetta. In this sense, the cormorant effect is, on the predation front, more devastating than the wild boar". "In light of these considerations, we ask that the selection quotas be immediately adjusted to the current state of emergency and that, in parallel, a study be started on the ecosystems pertaining to the Lombard water bodies, accompanied by a specific census activity for each basin and watercourse.
Qualified operators and volunteer hunters
"Given that the provincial staff cannot even sustain the current selection percentages, it seems more necessary than ever to be able to send on missions the qualified operators and volunteer hunters, in addition to the specialized companies already operating in Lombardy in the PSA sector, authorizing them to access the night roosts precisely in order to satisfy the need to reach quotas suitable for protecting the fish fauna and containing the spread of parasitic diseases of particular health relevance that can reach humans". Thus Floriano Massardi, regional councilor of the League, president of the commission 'Agriculture, mountains and forests' first signatory of the motion approved to ask the Lombardy Region for incisive interventions for the selective control of the cormorant.
