Brand new organism
Lombardy region The Lombardy Region has established the Large Carnivores Steering Committee, a new coordination body that brings together institutional stakeholders involved in the management, monitoring, and prevention of potential damage related to the presence of large predators. The Committee, chaired by Gianluca Comazzi, Councilor for Land and Green Systems of the Lombardy Region, met today for the first time, officially launching its activities. The new body's responsibilities include developing guidelines, operational protocols, behavioral norms, and technical guidelines to improve regional governance of the phenomenon.
A dedicated app
Representatives of numerous organizations and institutions already working on the issue are present at the meeting: from the Lombardy Region, in addition to the Directorate for Territory and Green Systems, the Directorate for Agriculture, the Directorate for Welfare, and the Directorate for the Presidency; Ersaf (National Agency for the Environment, Food and Forestry); the Stelvio National Park; the Lombardy Provincial Police Force; the Carabinieri Forestry Corps; the Ticino Park, the Groane Park, and the Orobie Bergamasche Park. Also present was Regional Councilor Giacomo Zamperini, president of the Special Commission for the Promotion and Protection of Mountain and Border Areas – Relations between Lombardy and the Swiss Confederation. During the meeting, a new technological tool was also presented, which will be operational in the coming months: an app dedicated to monitoring large carnivores, intended for professionals. This software will allow real-time reporting and documentation of tracks and sightings, contributing to the creation of an increasingly accurate and up-to-date database on the presence of wolves and other large predators in Lombardy.
An open and constructive discussion
On the operational level, during today's meeting, the establishment of a stakeholder discussion group was announced, involving environmental associations, hunting representatives, agricultural organizations, and other interested parties. The aim is to extend the dialogue beyond the institutional sphere, encouraging open and constructive discussion with stakeholders to gather insights, proposals, and input useful for defining future regional policies on the matter. "The management of large carnivores," commented Councilor Comazzi, "is an important issue and must be addressed with seriousness, method, and the ability to listen. By establishing the Committee, we want to bring together the relevant institutional stakeholders to strengthen coordination, improve monitoring, and develop shared strategies that reconcile the protection of biodiversity with the defense of economic activities and local communities. At the same time, we also want to involve stakeholders, because only through dialogue can we identify effective and lasting solutions." "One aspect that shouldn't be underestimated," Comazzi concluded, "is proper communication; providing comprehensive information helps raise awareness of the phenomenon, even among non-experts. If the right precautions are taken and prevention is implemented, it is possible to coexist with large carnivores." (Source: Lombardy Region – LNews)
