The Fidene shooting
The legal case relating to the dramatic events of last December in Rome, with the killing of four people in Fidene - which occurred using a weapon stolen from the Rome shooting range - has reached an extremely important moment with the indictment of the perpetrator of the massacre – Claudio Campiti, member of TSN Rome – who will have to answer for voluntary homicide aggravated by premeditation and futile motives and attempted homicide. In the same preliminary hearing, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defense were also notified of the indictment as civil managers for the TSN Section of Rome, while any compensation liability on the part of theItalian Shooting Union.
Direct responsibilities
The tragic story remains tragic, as does the profound dismay and pain it generated. The GUP's decision, however, clearly exempts the UITS from direct responsibilities that had erroneously been attributed to it with respect to the matters falling within the competence of the ministries and therefore confirms how the UITS itself has operated correctly within the prerogatives and functions assigned to it. The fact that the UITS has no competence over the supervision relating to the use and movement of weapons within the sections was appropriately recognized by the judge and supports the attitude held by our organization even when it was subjected to unfounded interpretations formulated by some press outlets. The UITS has always responded with punctuality and great detail, taking care to keep the tones of the cross-examination low as required by the sacrosanct respect towards the victims and their families, whose lives have been turned upside down by this absurd tragedy.
The trial in February
However, it remains the duty of the Italian Shooting Union to take into account all the circumstances that have emerged from the matter and to multiply efforts to further increase safety within the shooting ranges, constantly urging the sections to keep their attention high on this problem. Obviously it will be the trial that will begin on February 5, 2024 and the resulting verdicts that will provide justice to those who suffered the painful consequences of the criminal act. For its part, the Italian Shooting Union will continue to commit itself to the moral duty of not forgetting what happened, making its contribution to improving the regulations in force where possible (source: UITS).
