Overcrowding of pigs
Three telephone numbers and an email address, prominently displayed on the website Madonie Park (available on this link) to report the presence of suids on private land in the Park area. A simple idea but which, according to the testimonies collected, is offering a solution to people experiencing the problem of overcrowding of pigs in the Madonie area. The Madonie Park, in recent times, has given a great acceleration to selecontrol activities, also thanks to the purchase of new manhole covers (cages for suiids) which can be requested by private individuals who find the presence of these ungulates in the vicinity of the their properties.
Containment and control
The Management Plan for the control of the swine population is essentially divided into two phases, the first which concerns the methods of containment and control of wild boars, through selective control activities and capture activities using manhole covers, with subsequent killing by selective controllers specially trained. The second phase, however, involves the destination of the slaughtered animals and the use of the meat, a supply chain that is about to be closed thanks to the forthcoming publication of a long list of subjects authorized to purchase and market the meat.
Activities to speed up
But let's go back to the aspect that most interests residents, that is, the intensification and speeding up of suid capture activities, in particular thanks to manhole covers. “We thank the commissioner of the Park Authority Salvatore Caltagirone and all his staff – says Marco Calderaro, well-known restaurateur from Petralia Sottana – since the telephone number was published on the Park website, we have found a fast and effective response from the 'Body. On August 31st I made the request for a manhole cover to be placed on my land in the Sant'Elia district, in Petralia Sottana, on September 7th the manhole cover was delivered and assembled by the Park staff and, within a couple of days we captured 5 boars. Far-sighted strategy given the now almost unsustainable situation. Effective tool! We hope to obtain the desired results in the short and long term” (Madonie Park).
