A small but significant gesture
The ACMA (Association of Migratory Water Hunters) recently summarized the results of the Mallard 2026 Project, which is targeting mallard ducks and is being carried out by collaborators in the Marche region: " A small gesture that can make a difference for a species that in recent years has struggled to find suitable nesting sites in constantly cleared and worked riverbeds and canals ."
The statistics
According to available data, 57 mallard nests were installed, while 37 were occupied, with 166 chicks born. The nest occupancy rate is very close to 65% (64,9% to be precise), while there were 4,5 chicks born for each occupied nest. The average number of chicks per installed nest, however, is 2,9.
The provinces in detail
The results for the Marche province are interesting. If we look at the installed nests, we discover that the primacy belongs to Pesaro-Urbino (27), closely followed by Ancona (20). Macerata (8) and Ascoli Piceno (2) are further behind, while there are no nests in the Fermo area. Ancona and Pesaro Urbino also dominate the ranking of occupied nests (16 and 15 respectively), without forgetting the individuals born: 90 are from the Pesaro area, 49 from the Ancona area and 27 from the Macerata area).
