Large participation
The CAC hare working trial for hounds was held on August 8 and 9, 2026, organized by the Mantua SIPS section in collaboration with the MN 3 Territorial Hunting Area and the hunting associations Federcaccia, Arci Caccia, Libera Caccia, and Enal Caccia. This year's trial was held at the "Osteria Pomara Quella Vecchia Locanda" in Pomara (MN), serving traditional local dishes and home cooking. Numerous competitors participated, with registration closing early to fill the available spots. There were 80 competitors across the two days, coming from neighboring regions as well as Lombardy.
The subjects presented
During the two-day trials, which also counted toward the provincial championship, 24 packs, 32 pairs, and 24 singles competed, forming 10 heats in the registered category and 10 in the open category. A total of 212 dogs from various hound breeds were entered, carefully and expertly evaluated by the expert ENCI judges: Giorgio Bianchetti, Luigi Fusar Poli, Adriano Pataccini, Maria Assunta Villa, and Gastone Zani for the registered category, and by federal judges Mario Pellegrini, Gianpietro Sanzeni, Tiberio Salvini, Gilberto Rossato, and Rinaldo Tavazzi for the open category. Thanks to their professionalism and the support of an excellent team of guides, the trials were conducted smoothly.
Difficult terrain and climate
The trial grounds, located in the municipalities of Viadana, Dosolo, Pomponesco, Sabbioneta, San Martino dell'Argine, and Gazzuolo, made available by ATC MN3, are typical of the lower Mantua area, which at this time of year consist of stubble, alfalfa, cereal crops, apple orchards, a few orchards, vineyards, and plowed land. These large areas, with occasional restrictions due to the presence of roads or houses, were the only habitations present: hares (in some limited areas, even miniature hares), pheasants, and a few foxes. Despite the dry, drought-stricken terrain and scorching heat on both days of the trial—climate conditions that do not favor the hounds' sense of smell—the presence of hares allowed the trial rounds to be conducted, during which the dogs had the opportunity to encounter game and perform valuable tasks, earning several qualifications.
Convivial lunch
The event concluded with the traditional, much-appreciated convivial lunch (cook Paola was excellent and friendly) and the awards ceremony for the best subjects. There were emotional moments during the award ceremony for the trophies dedicated to the memory of the late Gianni Orlandelli and Giancarlo Varotti, hounds from Viadana, and Sandro Gelmini, remembered by hunting friends. The usual thanks were extended to Bruno Mangoni, organizational coordinator, and his staff; Agostino Scovoli, provincial president of the "PROSEGUGIO"; Mauro Vaccari, director of the ATC MN 3; the farmers who provided their land; the judges; the chaperones who worked tirelessly to provide the competitors with the best possible conditions; all the sponsors; and finally, the competitors and their assistants who contributed to the smooth running of the event (source: FIDC).
